Ilulissat lies far north, above the Arctic Circle, but it's still easy to reach from anywhere in the world. The most common way to travel to Ilulissat is by plane all year round, but it's also possible to travel by coastal ferry in summer. Discover the best ways to get here, whether by plane or boat. Book with a local
When you plan experiences in Greenland, choosing between a local operator and a booking portal is about more than where you click to buy a ticket. In Ilulissat, that choice can make a big difference to how your day on the water actually feels, from how easy it is to ask questions to how much you get out of the place itself. Many travellers start on a large booking portal. That makes sense. Portals are easy to find, they gather many products in one place, and they often feel familiar, especially if you're planning a bigger trip with several stops. But in a destination like Ilulissat, where weather, ice conditions and local factors matter, it often helps to speak directly with the people running the tour. The biggest difference is the distance between you and the experience itself. A booking portal is a middleman. It shows tours and often handles payment and marketing, but it's usually not the portal that's standing on the quay, checking the harbour in the morning or adjusting the day's plan to the conditions in Disko Bay. A local operator runs the tour itself. That means you often get direct contact with the people who know the route, the boat, the weather and the area around the Ilulissat Icefjord, Eqi, Oqaatsut or Ilimanaq. For you as a guest, that means less filtering and more accurate information. This matters even more in Greenland, where nature doesn't follow standard schedules. A whale safari, a boat trip among the icebergs or a private charter can be amazing, but it's best when the planning is based on the real conditions on site and not only on a product listing. This is where the difference really shows. Portals work best when the product is fixed: a set departure, a set duration, a set setup. That works well for many city activities. But in Greenland, many guests want a bit more flexibility. Maybe you're travelling as a couple and want a quieter trip. Maybe you're a small group that wants to combine sightseeing with fishing. Maybe you're arriving on a cruise and have a narrow time window. Maybe you want a private boat trip with time to stop, take photos and enjoy the silence between the icebergs without being tied to a standard route. These conversations are easier to have directly with a local operator. There's often more room to clarify capacity, departure time, wishes and practical details before you book.
